By Molly O'Neill Attention: calling all coffee lovers, coffee snobs, and coffee addicts. If you’re looking for a good cup of Joe –– both affordable and delicious, there are cafés and baristas awaiting your arrival. If you want to escape the captivity of campus and branch out from a brewed cup of Starbucks coffee and treat yourself, continue reading. If you’re getting out of town and want coffee along on your road trip, or conversely plan to inhabit the library, there are coffee kiosks such as Florence Coffee and Hot Shotz Coffee and coffee houses around Butte. Hot Shotz offers white coffee beans, which contain more caffeine than dark coffee beans, and make for a drink easier on the digestive tract. If you haven’t experienced the flavor of white coffee beans, I recommend a stop at 2305 Harrison Ave. |
The Hummingbird Café has a free spirit vibe with a variety of drip coffee on the menu from Missoula and the surrounding areas. They also have an espresso machine and regular, almond, and soy milk. The atmosphere is a comfortable place with the right ambiance to study if you get there early enough for a seat and are not bothered by the hustle of waitresses and constant traffic of incoming customers. The café opens at 7:30 am and closes at 4 in the afternoon during the week. If you’re wanting to stay and have lunch their menu is on the pricier side.
Park and Main Café has a welcoming atmosphere where baristas know you by name if you’re a regular. They offer regular, soy milk, and cashew milk. All of which create tasty lattes, steamers, and cappuccinos. They have a large variety of breakfast and lunch foods on their menus, all of which are fresh bakery goods make that day as well as frittatas, omelets, burritos, and salads.
Wetona’s Café is in downtown Butte off of Amherst Ave and offers a plethora of coffee flavors. They are open weekdays from 7:00am to 3:00pm. They have a bakery and deli and offer affordable prices for college students wanting to dine out on a college budget.
Jailhouse Café is on the east side of Montana St, along Park St. The café sits in a historic building that once jailed convicts of Butte. The atmosphere is open and spacious. If you’re looking for a quiet place to study, this is your spot. Although, it is not very private if you’re one who likes to hide in the corner and avoid social interaction.
The Venus Rising is on Granite St across from the court house. They have an artsy vibe with eclectic decor upon entrance. You can people watch from your table while listening to alternative music and sipping on your latte. You may have even see local police officers ordering their morning java.
The coffee shops listed all provide affordable morning joe’s to perk you up during your slump. Check them out if you need a diversion from the everyday Mr. Coffee at your home, or within the limits of campus. If you’re not a coffee drinker, don’t let that stop you from the experience these coffee shops have to offer.
