At Montana Tech, the end of the semester means the beginning of finals for some and fierce competitions for others. The “Crap in the Cab Competition” began on April 10th at 3:00PM in Tech’s Courtyard as a continuation of M-Day Activities presented by ASMT and Campus Entertainment. Students from every major huddled around a white Chevrolet Silverado as the hail, snow, and competitive spirits began to fly.
Twenty-one participants went into Monday’s event known the rules of the “Crap in the Cab Competition”, the last one left standing, or sitting, with at least one hand on the truck would win the first place prize of $1,000 in mysteriously wrapped rewards. According to the competition rules outlined by an email from Campus Entertainment, participants could stand or sit throughout the activity, as long as a chair wasn’t being used, a ten minute bathroom break would be given every 3 hours, and a phone charging station would be provided for participants.
After over 24 hours exposed to the ever-changing elements, the number of contestants had dwindled and the remaining participants implemented a variety of strategies. Patrick White, Nathan Lewis, and Kodi Neumiller ordered pizza while Logan Gaddis loading up on layers of coats, sweats, and sleeping bags.
At 7:06AM on Wednesday the 12th, with a total of 40 hours and 6 minutes straight of standing, John Bearden, a freshman from El Paso, Texas, received first place and $1,000 in prizes. Logan Gaddis, a sophomore from Spokane, Washington, came in close behind Bearden and earned second place. In third place was Kodi Neumiller, a junior from Colstrip, Montana.
Among his other prizes, Bearden won a much coveted $400 Nintendo Switch gaming system. He reported in an interview with the Montana Standard that, following the competition, he went to his 8:00AM class and straight to a long overdue nap. The “Crap in the Cab Competition” cleaned up just in time for Tech’s Festival to begin at 10:00AM in the courtyard where everyone could enjoy free prizes and food without competition.
