The end of the semester is drawing near, and many students are asking themselves, “Are you ready for the end times?” Finals are scheduled for Monday, May 1st through Friday, May 5th of this semester, and the May 2017 graduation commencement ceremony is the following Saturday, May 6th at 11 a.m., in the Butte Civic Center.
For many students, this means intensive study sessions, final projects, the 6th Annual Techxpo on April 27th in the HPER, prolonged library hours, and preparations for the graduation ceremony. Others of us are left wondering, “Where did this semester go?” If you find your semester slipping away, have no fear for Chris VanNuland is here at Montana Tech.
In Tech’s Student Activities center in the Student Union Building (SUB), VanNuland and his team have prepared to serve up two months of events for Tech students. Following Spring Break, Friday, March 10th through Sunday, March 19th, VanNuland and his entertainment associates, Joel Arbaugh and Kabree Nichols, will be hosting a variety of events. This includes the weekly Thursday night movie at 7PM in the Library Auditorium, Casino Night, and “M Days”. Their goal is to give Diggers the opportunity to get out of the resident halls and apartments to utilize their campus.
This semester, Tech’s Casino Night will be on Wednesday, March 22nd in the Coffee Mill Building. The evening of “casino games” includes Bingo, free finger foods, and “thousands of dollars in prizes”. From past experiences, VanNuland noted that the community, including campus ministry team Chi Alpha, led by Titus Bergren, and Larry Surrisi, the director of Food Services at Montana Tech, come together to make Casino Night happen. VanNuland and company are prepared to service hundreds of students this year in the Mill.
Following Casino Night, VanNuland states that the next big event, M-Days, is going to be “huge”. A tradition that started in the 1960s, the original M-Days events included painting the rocks that construct Tech’s signature “M” atop Big Butte, cleaning up and around the Big Butte Open Space Recreation Area, and campus contests like Tug-of-War. Similar to past M-Days, the tentative line-up of events for this year will focus on campus comradery with activities like a Quadrathalon for prizes, an outdoor movie, an “Egg Drop” contest, a talent show, free BBQ and live music, and assorted outdoor tournaments.
While the line-up of events for this year’s M-Days are still tentative, VanNuland and his team have brainstormed ideas of how to memorialize the origins of M-Days.
“We’re hoping to clean the M up and paint the rocks,” VanNuland said.
Along with this statement, VanNuland offered an invitation to any clubs that want to help to join the efforts, saying, “We have all the supplies.”
If you, your crew, or your club are looking to impact Tech before the semester ends, contact Chris VanNuland at the SUB Office. Volunteer your time and abilities, and the Student Activities team will do the rest. For more information, you can reach Chris VanNuland at (406) 496-4466 or [email protected].
