There's something about a senior night that always brings out the best in a team. The lady Orediggers came out of the gates putting an immediate 6-0 lead on the lady saints. Carroll had no chance to even get their feet off the ground in the first half.
Then in the second half, Carroll gained back the ground they had lost. The Saints slowly worked the ball down low, dominating the post-game. By the end of the 3rd quarter the score was 37-37. Thanks to a couple drives by senior Hattie Thatcher and several shots by Callie Remsen, the Diggers gained back a slight lead against the Saints. That slight lead pulled away even farther, and the Lady Diggers left the gym with a 58-50 final score.
The men's Oredigger basketball team played their last game of the season on Thursday this week against Carroll College. Right out of the gates, the saints put a tough defense on the Orediggers and the Diggers had a tough time even getting a shot off. On the other side of the court, the Saints couldn't miss a shot. Ryan Imhof for the saints couldn't be stopped on the perimeter or underneath the basket. This pattern continued for the rest of the game, and the Diggers couldn't catch a momentum swing to bring them back in the game. This game might not have been exactly how the Diggers wanted to end their season, but this young team brings hope to the next upcoming season.
Usually, it proves difficult to beat a team twice in a row in the same week, but the Lady Orediggers came through against the Lady Saints in the first round Frontier Conference playoff game March 2. The Lady Orediggers shot the lights out in the first half and gave Carroll no chance to catch up. Montana Tech shot 85 percent from the field in the first half, and 66 percent for the game. The Diggers put up a full court press, where the Coverdale twins were quick enough to get a few easy buckets to put Tech ahead by a double-digit lead. Both Martha Dembek and Hattie Thatcher scored double-doubles for the night. The Lady Orediggers moved on in the playoffs and challenged LC State on February 28.
Against LC State in the second round of the playoffs, the Lady Diggers came up short, falling to the No. 2-ranked Warriors 46-85. A poor shooting performance by Tech combined with lights-out shooting by the Warriors contributed to the season-ending loss. Orediggers Hattie Thatcher and Kourtney Coverdell pitched in ten points each, while Minica Landdeck and Martha Dembek scored seven and five, respectively.
The Tech women’s basketball team finishes the season with a 16-15 record, coming out .500 in conference play. The men’s team finished their season 7-20 overall and a 2-15 conference record.
