When talking to the dedicated Oredigger football fans, there seems to be a concern as to how the team will do this upcoming 2016 season, due to losing some crucial defensive players. The football team, however, says not to worry. The football players are focused, and ready to take each week one game at a time.
When asked what the Orediggers are looking forward to this season, senior linebacker Eddie Smith replied, “We are looking forward to September 3rd when we play against Carroll College. That will set the tone for this season.”
In my opinion, Smith is absolutely right in this context. We all know that the main goal of this season is to get back to the Frontier Conference championship, but first the Orediggers need to win the challenging games ahead.
The Montana Tech football team plans on winning the upcoming games by playing like the band of brothers they are. This team obviously has a great chemistry. They do everything together - they live together, they study together, and they play football together.
Junior tight end Andy Butcher said, “I’m just looking forward to another great season playing with my brothers. It’s always a good time to be with the boys!”
The team’s chemistry is undoubtedly their greatest strength. These guys know that they can count on each other, whether it is on the field or off. This family of football players is headed straight to the top, and I am excited to watch the journey ahead of them. Come Saturday afternoon, on September 10, I will be watching the Orediggers make their first home debut. Will you be there to cheer them on too?
The Lady Oredigger volleyball team, on the other hand, has many different qualities that could set them apart from the other teams in the Frontier Conference as well. This team is hard working, well rounded, and has a group of seniors that have the experience it takes to lead them to victory. During this year’s Big Sky Volleyball Challenge, a regional tournament held at the Butte Civic Center August 26 and 27, every player saw time on the court at one point or another. This goes to show how versatile this team is, and how each member of the team can bring a different weapon to the Oredigger volleyball cavalry. If the Montana Tech volleyball team can utilize the experience of their seniors, and the motivation of their underclassmen, they are sure to conquer any goals they set their sights upon.
When talking to senior setter Makenzie Bauck about the Lady Orediggers team goals, she stated, “Our team goal for this season is to peak at the end of the season.” Their plan of attack to reach this goal, is simply to focus on getting better every time they step foot in the gym. “We try to think about little things that we can work on, and if things aren’t going as planned, we can focus on one little thing that we can change to become better,” Bauck added.
It is obvious that these girls are ready to take on this upcoming season, and achieve their goal of making it to nationals. Whether these girls can pull it off or not, it will definitely be a memorable year nevertheless. The Lady Orediggers have put in a tremendous amount of work this summer and spring, and I am excited to see where their hard work will take them this season.
