When I look back on the last four years as a student at Montana Tech, I can’t believe how different my life looks than what I imagined as a freshman. In the past four years, I’ve been on 38 flights, to seven major U.S. cities, and to four different countries. And here’s the catch—I haven’t paid a dime for travel. As a freshman, I never imagined that I’d get do to something I love—scientific research and travel—and get paid to do it.

Locals and visitors alike celebrate Saint Patrick's Day in one of the most Irish cities in America

By Stephanie Brewster

Butte, with nearly a quarter of its residents of Irish descent and the “Most Irish City in the United States”, according to Afar Magazine, celebrated its Irish heritage loud and proud on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th. Many came together to enjoy Butte’s festivities as St. Patrick’s Day landed on a Friday for the first time in 11 years. It was anticipated by John McKee from Headframe Spirits that the celebration would bring 100,000 spectators and participants on that fine Friday. No one was disappointed as people flooded Butte’s streets to enjoy the festivities.

5 things to do around Butte, Montana when it's less than pleasant outside

By Emmy Keenan

Some days it feels like there only so many ways to entertain yourself in the wake of a classic Montana snowstorm. The temptation to romp in a foot of fresh powder seems much less novel and exciting as the winter season drags on. We’re often filled with dread at thought of shoveling snow, chipping ice, or running late because we didn’t give ourselves enough time to scrape our cars. However, there are still many fun and inexpensive ways to enjoy the area during its colder season. Butte’s recent hosting of SnoFlinga, Montana’s festival celebrating winter, both reminded me and introduced me to many of these seasonal activities worth taking a study break for.

#DeleteUber trending after Trump refugee ban, federal judge temporarily overturns order

By Macy Ricketts

NEW YORK - Last Saturday night, in light of newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump’s immigration order at John F. Kennedy Airport, the ride service Uber angered the New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NWTWA) by turning off its “surge” function with service to JFK. The NWTWA had recently announced a strike between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. in order to protest President Trump’s sweeping executive order to suspend entry of all refugees to the United States for 120 days, and to prohibit entry for Syrian refugees indefinitely. The ban also placed a 90-day suspension on immigration for citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

Astrological signs and horoscopes are like a cult. Devoted followers tattoo limbs with their significant sign. Leaving the house requires reading their luck or misfortune for the day in the newspaper or on an app on their phone. Some concede only dating their compatible astrological sign. Pins on Pinterest consist of best hairstyles suited for your zodiac sign, a diagnosis of your personality in correspondence to your sign, and the sign your best friend should have. If you’re a Capricorn, you’re more outgoing than a Sagittarius; A Taurus will have ongoing conflictions if they date a Gemini.

You attend a university in Montana’s second most haunted city. Butte, Montana is not only the headquarters of the nation’s second best “Public School”, according to U.S. News’ Higher Education database, it is also second, just behind Deer Lodge and its haunted prison, on the list of most haunted towns in Montana. According to a 2014 post by 96.3 The Blaze, a Missoula rock radio station, Butte contains over five haunted venues, all within walking distance of Tech’s campus.

A
s Americans, every four years we choose a presidential candidate to be the face of our nation. This year is no exception— the daunting task approaches with November’s election looming overhead. If we haven’t already, it’s time we educate ourselves in a rushed attempt to make a wise decision, or what we would like to believe.

Everything you need to know about the Dakota Access Pipeline controversy

Macy Ricketts

D
espite months of protest, construction, and legislation, the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline continues to make headlines. The $3.8 billion, 1,200-mile long underground pipeline is being built to deliver crude oil from the Bakken to Patoka, Illinois. Originally slated to cross underneath the Missouri River near Bismarck, North Dakota, the petroleum company Energy Transfer Partners rewrote blueprints for the pipeline to instead cross the Missouri near the Standing Rock Sioux Indian reservation. The pipeline, if completed, would have the potential to transport 470,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

By Molly O’Neill

Many Montana Tech students will be surprised to hear that a Park Street expansion is in the works. The county plan states it would turn West Park from Uptown to Tech into a two-lane boulevard with a tree lined median in the center of the boulevard. This is a 6.5M project proposal. Chief Executive, Matt Vincent, wants to invite a more “campus” on the entrance street to Tech.  Pending approval, a tentative effective date is planned for 2017, or 2018 –– dependent on approval and funding.
